This is the week of TEDGlobal! An official TED-conference, held over the course of four days in Oxford. TEDGlobal “will explore the shocking undercurrent of good news just below the surface of today’s troubling headlines”, says its curator Bruno Guisani.

Last year I attended TEDGlobal and I immediately fell in love with the beautiful city of Oxford and really enjoyed the Brittish humor that added yet another layer to the TED-experience.

This year is different though. I decided not to to travel but to gather with the TEDxAmsterdam Crew + guests to watch the official live stream together. We’ll be hanging out all week at BoomChicago which usually is a place for stand-up-comedy and food and drinks.

Gisteren vond in de RAI de NL-Conference plaats. Een initiatief van de branche-organisatie MPI en georganiseerd door onder meer de jonge honden Xander Kranenburg en Erik Peekel . Het was een interessante dag waar bij (R)evolutie centraal stond. Veel afwisselende sprekers en het publiek werd dan ook lekker door elkaar geschud.

Ik mocht ook een praatje houden en heb verteld over wat de evenementen-industrie kan leren van TED:

Wie goed op de hoogte is -wie de nieuwsberichten volgt en zich verdiept in de achtergronden- heeft het zwaar. We leven in een tijd van economische crisis, van natuurrampen, ongeneeslijke ziektes, oorlog en armoede. Tegelijkertijd kun je stellen dat we nog nooit zoveel mogelijkheden hebben gehad om daar iets aan te doen. Dankzij technologie zijn we meer verbonden met elkaar dan ooit, kennis is alomtegenwoordig en de wetenschap draait op volle toeren. Waarom verandert er dan niets? Als je hier te lang over nadenkt, zou je zelfs boos of hopeloos worden.

What the world needs now
Gelukkig is er ook een andere manier om met deze observatie om te gaan. Vandaag is het congres begonnen dat probeert al die problemen te benoemen en de oplossing ervan dichterbij te brengen. Dat gebeurt door het samenbrengen van allerlei mensen, uit allerlei verschillende delen van de wereld die stuk voor stuk een expert zijn in hun specialistische vakgebied. Door met elkaar ideeen uit te wisselen, door op een optimistische manier naar de toekomst te delen, krijg je vanzelf weer zin om de mouwen op te stropen en het gevoel van hopeloosheid om te zetten in daadkracht.

De naam van dit congres: TED. Het is de conferentie die sinds 1984 plaatsvindt in Californie en waar de afgelopen jaren sprekers als Al Gore, Bill Gates en Bono hun ideeen m.b.t. de toekomst hebben gedeeld. Afgelopen jaar heb ik de eer gehad om een Nederlandse versie van dit congres te organiseren, onder de naam TEDxAmsterdam. En op dit moment ben ik aanwezig in het publiek van TED 2010.

Future of Medicine
Worden al die problemen die ik hierboven schetste opgelost? Nou, ja bijna. Opvallend veel medische doorbraken worden gepresenteerd. De T van TED staat voor technologie en het is heel indrukwekkend om te zien hoe de nabije toekomst van onze gezondheid beinvloed wordt door nieuwe technologie.

A few years ago I had the pleasure of spending some time with Biz Stone, one of the founders of Twitter. In 2007 his biggest concern appeared to be hardware: “How can we keep on growing like this when everytime we plug in another machine the website is down?”

Few years later it’s amazing to see how fast the website has grown and how little downtime their is nowadays. A series of smart moves (among them: buying summize.com instead of building their own search application) later, Twitter seems to have shifted from “What are you doing” to “What’s happening”.

My guess is that this is the result of Twitter becoming mainstream. It used to be a tool for modern -look at me-marketeers, but it’s becoming more and more a tool for civil reporting. Thus, the question: “what’s happening?” can be easily answered -in realtime- on Twitter.

That’s why I like to state that Twitter became mainstream on 9 December 2009, the moment they changed from What Are You Doing to What’s Happening.

我问了一个也在TED演讲的同事-Seth Godin，他回答说：这个问题我考虑过，我会去开一家餐馆。这个答案不错，难道他识破了我的阴谋?呵呵。之所以问这个问题，是因为我自己在2008年 12月的一整月里完全离开了互联网。没有谷歌，没有电子邮件，没有浏览网页，什么都没有。

这是我做过的最有趣的事儿了，…至少在第一个星期里我这样觉得。真的很有趣，很滑稽，大家开始给我写信（手写在纸上的），玩儿各种恶作剧（比如把我的键盘和鼠标藏起来）。

Gisteren lanceerde CNN zijn nieuwe website. Al eerder loofde ik CNN om hun slimme samenwerkingen, bijvoorbeeld toen ze tijdens de vorige Amerikaanse verkiezingen optrokken met Youtube.

In dit geval ben ik dubbelblij aangezien ze het begrip “TEDtalk Tuesdays” nieuw leven inblazen:

Starting next week, CNN.com will show a TEDTalk on its homepage every Tuesday. It’s part of a big redesign for CNN.com that puts video front-and-center, and makes room for opinion, commentary and partners like People magazine, EW.com, Oprah and TED.com

TEDxAmsterdam, to be held Nov. 20, 2009, will announce an event speaker every Tuesday, starting with Kevin Kelly, founding executive editor of Wired magazine. In his best-seller, Out of Control (1994), Kelly predicted the rise of decentralized systems and network economies, and the convergence of biology and technology — between living organisms and machines. Subsequent developments such as grid computing, biomimicry, synthetic biology, DNA-computing and artificial life confirm his insights. Kelly is also associated with The Well, Global Business Network and The LongNow Foundation.

TEDxAmsterdam will take place at the Royal Institute for the Tropics and will feature TED Talks videos, original speakers and music. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that brings people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

More than two thousand people applied to take part in TEDxAmsterdam. The attendees of TEDxAmsterdam “consist of a few hundred, hand-picked, opinion leaders from in and outside the Netherlands. As the committee of recommendation — former prime minister of the Netherlands Wim Kok, Hans Wijers of Akzo Nobel, KNAW director Robbert Dijkgraaf and former TED speakers Louise Fresco, Theo Jansen and Siegfried Woldhek — illustrates, the attendees will be just as extraordinary as the speakers,” says organizer Jim Stolze.

TEDxAmsterdam will be streamed live. Tickets will also be awarded to people who win special challenges, for example idea-contests. Creative individuals can also enter an video/animation competition. Submissions of a potential TEDxTalk can be sent to www.tedxamsterdam.nl. The winner will be allowed to present a five-minute speech at the event.

TEDxAmsterdam, an independently organized TED event, will take place November 20, 2009, at the Hermitage Royal Tropical Institute, featuring TED Talks videos, original speakers, and music.

“It’s a great honor to host a TEDx event in The Netherlands”, says organizer Jim Stolze. “TED has been around since 1984, but only a handful of Dutch people actually attended a TED conference. Many more of them will be able to experience the effect of this ‘ultimate brain spa’ thanks to TEDx program.”

Stolze sought the assistance of twelve people, each with his or her own specialty, in forming a foundation, Stichting TEDxAmsterdam; the board also includes Monique Dusseldorp and Marian Spier. Others involved in TEDxAmsterdam are Hans Wijers (Akzo Nobel), Robbert Dijkgraaf (KNAW), Don Levy (VP at Sony) and TED speakers Louise Fresco, Theo Jansen and Siegfried Woldhek.

Het is alweer even geleden dat ik op deze plek trots meldde dat het TED-congres dit jaar naar Nederland zou komen. Op dat moment was eigenlijk alleen bekend dat de licentie vanuit de VS aan mij was toebedeeld. Inmiddels is er veel gebeurd en wil ik dat graag met jullie delen.

Het allerbelangrijkste is dat er inmiddels een mooi, klein team is gevormd. Allemaal toppers met een geheel eigen specialisme, maar vooral bezeten van TED. Inmiddels wordt van alle kanten hulp aangeboden en wordt het tijd dat we een aantal dingen naar buiten gaan brengen. Dat doen we uiteraard via een eigen website waar op dit moment aan gebouwd wordt.

Enkele highlights alvast:

• De datum is 20 november 2009
• De locatie is nog geheim, maar erg bijzonder!
• Het event is invite-only
• Het event wordt georganiseerd door een Stichting (not for profit)
• Er is een indrukwekkend Comité van Aanbeveling en Adviesraad samengesteld
• Het event is gratis te bezoeken, of live via stream te volgen
• Qua inkomsten zijn we afhankelijk van sponsoring
• Binnenkort maken we de eerste sprekers bekend

Today TED announced a new brilliant extension to the TED-experience: TEDx. Where x stands for “independently organized TED event”. It’s my pleasure to announce TEDxAmsterdam!

Together with some other Dutch TED-izens I’m planning this event on October 23 November 20 of this year. It will be `a full day of inspiration, top speakers, all time favorite TED talks, food, people and music.`

For me personally, this is just the announcement. I look forward to your input and thoughts on how TED can be best experienced in The Netherlands. Therefore I will organise some meetings and open up a Wiki or Ning page.
