This week at a partnermeeting I had the pleasure to announce that the second edition of TEDxAmsterdam will take place in the Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam. On 30 November 2010, the stage of this beautiful city theater will be reserved for the new ideas of revolutionary thinkers and innovators in the field of technology, entertainment, design, art, science and business. For one day, this monumental city theater turns into “a theater of the mind”.

Jim informs the TEDxAms partners

In the words of Sasha Naod: “TEDxAmsterdam was the city’s sleeper hit last year. The conference attracted much media intention and there was a waiting list of more than 4500 people.” We were indeed surprised by the amount of positive reactions and the great interest. This is why we are moving to a larger location and also having some new surprises in store. Including a special children’s TED conference, similar to TEDx but for and by children.

At this same meeting Monique van Dusseldorp then revealed this years’ theme: “Science & Fiction”. Her interpretation:

Mankind is able to imagine great things which push the limits of science. Through the interplay of fiction (a dream that makes the world better) and science (the actual test-run and execution), we are getting one step ahead. “Science & Fiction” is therefore the central theme of the second edition of TEDxAmsterdam.

Top speakers from various disciplines will discuss their innovations, visions, perspectives and realizations in the area of technology, urban life, nature, the human body and more.

Revolutie in evenementen-land?

This morning I presented at the morning session of TED University. Lots of people asked if I could mail them the presentation. So I decided to upload it and make it available for download. A little transscript is below the slides.

Transcript: 8 ways to create a succesful TEDx

When you’re part of this community that strongly believes in “ideas worth spreading” and you give them this wonderful format of TEDx, no wonder these TEDx-organizers also want to share their ideas about what makes these local events so special. So, in the next couple of minutes I would like to present to you the 8 most important learnings that we as a TEDx-community have discovered this last year.

1. Don’t do it on your own
First of all: Don’t do it on your own. Form a team. You need people who are better than you on so many subjects. Don Levy said: “… we
are making this as much of a
community effort as we can.”

2. Try harder on the location
This is a picture of the European Parliament. Who would have thought that you could organize a TEDx Brussels over there? Or this one. A TEDx-event at Nasa. Space for Ideas. And it’s not that bigger is automatically better.

Hans Aarsman over fotografie

Thank you!!

Last night I slept well for the first time in weeks! What a relief that TEDxAmsterdam could live up to the (mega) high expectations. It was an amazing journey and a fantastic climax with warm words, splendid people and perfect ambiance.

Right now we’re releasing one talk each day (first one from Frans Timmermans, about ‘fear’) and I will give you my personal take-aways soon. But first a list of other people that have paid attention to our event:

Je kan kiezen voor “first come, first serve”.

PRESS RELEASE

TEDxAmsterdam, to be held Nov. 20, 2009, will announce an event speaker every Tuesday, starting with Kevin Kelly, founding executive editor of Wired magazine. In his best-seller, Out of Control (1994), Kelly predicted the rise of decentralized systems and network economies, and the convergence of biology and technology — between living organisms and machines. Subsequent developments such as grid computing, biomimicry, synthetic biology, DNA-computing and artificial life confirm his insights. Kelly is also associated with The Well, Global Business Network and The LongNow Foundation.

TEDxAmsterdam will take place at the Royal Institute for the Tropics and will feature TED Talks videos, original speakers and music. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that brings people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

More than two thousand people applied to take part in TEDxAmsterdam. The attendees of TEDxAmsterdam “consist of a few hundred, hand-picked, opinion leaders from in and outside the Netherlands. As the committee of recommendation — former prime minister of the Netherlands Wim Kok, Hans Wijers of Akzo Nobel, KNAW director Robbert Dijkgraaf and former TED speakers Louise Fresco, Theo Jansen and Siegfried Woldhek — illustrates, the attendees will be just as extraordinary as the speakers,” says organizer Jim Stolze.

TEDxAmsterdam will be streamed live. Tickets will also be awarded to people who win special challenges, for example idea-contests. Creative individuals can also enter an video/animation competition. Submissions of a potential TEDxTalk can be sent to www.tedxamsterdam.nl. The winner will be allowed to present a five-minute speech at the event.

TEDxAmsterdam in “De Hermitage”

TEDxAmsterdam, an independently organized TED event, will take place November 20, 2009, at the Hermitage Royal Tropical Institute, featuring TED Talks videos, original speakers, and music.

“It’s a great honor to host a TEDx event in The Netherlands”, says organizer Jim Stolze. “TED has been around since 1984, but only a handful of Dutch people actually attended a TED conference. Many more of them will be able to experience the effect of this ‘ultimate brain spa’ thanks to TEDx program.”

Stolze sought the assistance of twelve people, each with his or her own specialty, in forming a foundation, Stichting TEDxAmsterdam; the board also includes Monique Dusseldorp and Marian Spier. Others involved in TEDxAmsterdam are Hans Wijers (Akzo Nobel), Robbert Dijkgraaf (KNAW), Don Levy (VP at Sony) and TED speakers Louise Fresco, Theo Jansen and Siegfried Woldhek.

Enkele highlights alvast:

  • Het event is invite-only

Today TED announced a new brilliant extension to the TED-experience: TEDx. Where x stands for “independently organized TED event”. It’s my pleasure to announce TEDxAmsterdam!

Together with some other Dutch TED-izens I’m planning this event on October 23 November 20 of this year. It will be `a full day of inspiration, top speakers, all time favorite TED talks, food, people and music.`

For me personally, this is just the announcement. I look forward to your input and thoughts on how TED can be best experienced in The Netherlands. Therefore I will organise some meetings and open up a Wiki or Ning page.
